Production of Polyvinyl Alcohol–Alginate–Nanocellulose Fibers

In this study, nanocellulose is isolated from oil palm empty fruit bunches using ultrafine grinding and ultrasonication. Here, nanocellulose, a reinforcing agent, mixed with polyvinyl alcohol sodium alginate, which act as the matrices. Nanocellulose-based fibers are produced via wet spinning method calcium chloride coagulant solvent. The effects of content on morphological, mechanical, in vitro biocompatibility properties then examined, results demonstrating that increase produces rougher cross-section higher tensile strength addition up to 3%. Meanwhile, crystallinity increases 5%. 1% produce better biocompatibility, confirmed by cell viability lower inhibition.
